Silent wings
Noora Heiskanen

Inspired by the new ways of using biomaterials and my own earlier work developing delicate exoskeletons from cellulose-based materials, I wanted to create an art piece that reacts soundlessly and with organic movement patterns to the world around it. Butterfly-like cellulose wing structures are durable and light but also have some strength and flexibility. They are also entirely biodegradable. Nitinol wire that works like a muscle to lift the wings makes the movement soundless and can be programmed for more natural and random movement effect.
